Re: Crystal & Lauren's Civil Rights Unit

    Crystal and Lauren,

This is a powerful and JAM PACKED unit. I was really impressed. But after looking it over and taking care with your major question (Civil Rights Movement as success or failure) I honestly think my contributions about the radical and transnational edges of the Black Freedom Movement are irrelevant to your goals. In fact they may get in the way. If we understand the movement as one for Civil Rights, then yes in most ways it was a success. But (and this may be a higher level anaylsis) if we understand that this Freedom Movement, wanted the U.S. to be taken to task by a higher global authority, that many understood political/legal rights to be irrelevant without certain economic securities etc, then it was sort of a failure. Honestly I have reservations about (singly) understanding history (social movements) in terms of success or failure because the deams/visions/paradigms expunged or accepted are important parts of history and can re-emerge as building blocks for the future. What I have found with my students is that the radical/transnational parts of the Black freedom Movement are not significant because they failed but because students never even knew such visions were possible, that there were alternatives, that things could have gone a different way. I am not sure how you can impart such a lesson within the paradigm of success and failure.

So I am saying that I think you should just use Dan's paradigm and focus on the Civil Rights Movement and that is plenty in itself.

    Great Work,

    Davarian
